Government-backed initiatives continue to play a role in developing India's food processing sector by supporting manufacturing capacity, value addition, technology adoption and market expansion.
The Ministry of Food Processing Industries reported in July 2026 that the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI) had supported eligible businesses across multiple states. The programme has an approved outlay of ₹10,900 crore for FY 2021–22 to FY 2026–27.
The ministry also highlighted the PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme, which supports eligible micro food processing enterprises through credit-linked assistance, training, technology upgrades and market-linkage initiatives.

Where businesses may find opportunities
Smaller manufacturers often need to upgrade machinery, improve packaging, strengthen quality control or develop more marketable products. Access to suitable financial and technical support can help eligible enterprises pursue these improvements.
Potential areas for investment include:
- Food processing and production equipment.
- Packaging, labelling and product standardisation.
- Testing, quality assurance and storage infrastructure.
- Product development and branding.
- Skills development and improved manufacturing practices.
Understanding eligibility is essential
Not every business or project automatically qualifies for government assistance. Scheme guidelines, eligible expenditure, application windows, documentation and approval conditions must be checked carefully.
Entrepreneurs should consult official government resources or qualified professionals before making investment decisions based on an expected subsidy.
Industry takeaway: Food processing businesses should evaluate available support programmes as part of a broader investment plan rather than treating subsidies as guaranteed funding.
